Why Should You Buy New Tires?

May 7th, 2012

Buying tires is a big investment. Typically new tires cost anywhere from $400 – $1000 for a set. Performance tires can sometimes even be more expensive. But there are a few solid reasons why investing in new tires is a worthwhile expenditure.

Safety

Every 5 to 7 years your tires should be replaced. At 65,000 miles, or thereabouts, it’s a good idea to add new tires. New tires will help you stop, go, turn and allow you to control your vehicle on the road or off of it. If you have children new tires are a must, and hey, if you don’t – your life is worth a little something too, right?

Gas Savings

Bad, old tires decrease the amount of miles per gallon your vehicle gets. Your car has to work a little harder to put its power to use. With new tires, your car will run more efficiently. Proper mounting, balance and tire pressure are also essential for improved gas mileage. New tires will be mounted properly, balanced accordingly and will maintain pressure more effectively and for a longer duration than old, worn out tires.

Better Ride

Old tires are wobbly, bald, gas-sucking, mounted improperly, unbalanced, and won’t maintain pressure. Yeah, with all those problems, it’s no wonder the ride is rough and uncomfortable. New tires alleviate all those problems so you can focus on the road and enjoy the journey.

Peace and Comfort

How much does it cost to not have to worry about blowing out a tire? How much does the peace and comfort of safety cost? Well, about $400 – $1000 typically, as we’ve established! But seriously, new tires are a worthwhile investment and there is never a reason not to upgrade. Even money shouldn’t be an issue. Think of tires as a secondary form of vehicle insurance

Improved Looks

Why own a sweet-looking jeep, truck, SUV or car and ride on old tires? Everybody knows that deep black, shiny tires and sparkling rims are the benchmark of a beautiful performance vehicle or even a soccer mom’s mini-van. Take some time today and start shopping for your new tires. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with the purchase.

The Truck/Jeep Owners Guide to Buying the Right Wheels

April 20th, 2012

So you have decided its finally time to pull the trigger on a set of nice new wheels for that truck or jeep of yours. Now all you have to do is pick between the hundreds of wheel styles out there, should be easy enough right?  Before you pick out your set of wheels read our guide below and make sure that you are getting the set that will fit your driving style.

Tire Sizing Chart

Generally you should chose which wheels you would like only after you have chosen the ideal tires for your on/off road needs. Normally the larger you go; the better your vehicle will be for off-roading. This will all depend on the size and weight of your vehicle. Make sure to check out our article on why you should buy new tires.

Once you have settled on wheel size you will then need to choose between the three basic material compositions: steel, forged (aluminum alloy), and cast (aluminum alloy). Each type offers different advantages.

Wheel Questions you should know the answer to before purchase

Q1: How do I measure the width of a wheel?

A1: Measure the distance from the inside of one bead to the inside of the other bead.

Q2: What is wheel backspace?

A2: Backspace is the distance from the back edge of the rim to the mounting surface on the hub.

Q3: What is wheel offset?

A3: Offset is the distance from the wheel centerline to the mounting surface. Positive offset is when the mounting surface is outside the centerline. Negative offset is when the mounting surface is inside the center line.

Steal Truck Wheels

Steel wheels are the way to go if you are looking to become an extreme off-roader any time soon. They are built heavier and sturdier than aluminum alloy wheels are and will fair better through intense conditions. Steel wheels offer greater strength because they feature large amounts of iron mixed with carbon and other elements. Although, their heaviness will cost you more in the long run, as it will increase your gas mileage and put an added pressure on your bearings.

Rock Crawler Xtreme Steel Wheels

The Rock Crawler series of Pro Comp wheels are ideal for any off-road condition. Their heavy duty construction provides extreme durability.  Offering multiple styles of Steel wheels across a wide spectrum makes rock crawler one of the go to brands for any off-roading expert.

Because a Jeep isn’t a Jeep until it’s lifted and outfitted with oversized tires.

Alloy Wheels

Aluminum is the principal metal, which makes for a lightweight wheel. The reduced weight will increase the gas mileage on your vehicle and puts less strain on the bearings and other parts. But alloy wheels aren’t nearly as sturdy. A decent collision with a rock can fracture the wheel, which may be difficult to replace when you’re in the middle of nowhere. Forged wheels will prove to be stronger in off-road conditions than cast wheels. Although if you are looking strictly for an off-road wheel stick to steel. Alloy wheels will offer numerous more enhanced styles and lighter weight.

One less Truck In The Market

April 13th, 2012

It’s a sad day for Chevy Avalanche enthusiasts as Chevy announced that it will be discontinuing the decade long production of avalanche after 2013. The avalanche was a pioneer for four door (crew cab) truck models. Before the avalanche was introduced regular cab trucks flooded the market and were viewed as not being family friendly. After the avalanche broke the barrier, crew cab sales are now up to 65% of light model truck sales in 2011. Chevrolet would like to think that the avalanche had a large part in moving truck owners to a more family friendly mentality.

Chevrolet Avalanche

Chevrolet Avalanche

In 2003 Chevrolet sold 90,000 plus units of avalanches. In the past two years, avalanche sales plummeted barely reaching 20,000 units on the year. Although they will be discontinuing the model, Chevy will give the Avalanche a graceful departure. As they plan to roll out a special edition modeled Avalanche for 2013 called the “black Diamond”.

New Shocks Really Make a Difference On-road and Off-road

April 10th, 2012

Rough Country makes the suspension systems you need to survive rough country off-roading. Truck Add Ons proudly offers these suspension systems – including shocks – as a solid alternative to the other fantastic name brands we carry. One of the selling points that sets Rough Country shocks apart from the rest are the “Velocity Sensitive Valving”. What this means is the shock varies the resistance according to the piston rod speed. This improved valving increases the “smoothness” of the ride and improves control in serious off-road situations. The benefit to you is that you don’t have to turn any knobs or set the shocks to utilize this improved valving. The shocks re-adjust automatically, so you can just enjoy the ride!

The value of good shocks cannot be underestimated. Even for individuals who merely drive cars on smooth terrain, quality shocks are of the utmost importance. With poor or low-quality shocks, riders have an extremely unpleasant experience. If you are an off-roader, a good set of aftermarket shocks is a must. Hilly terrain, rocks and uneven ground push your vehicle to the extreme, and without quality shocks, you might as well stick to playing ATV video games.

Truckaddons.com has all the brand names you’ve come to love. Edelbrock, Rancho, Pro Comp, Skyjacker, Trailmaster, etc. Whether you choose Rough Country or another quality name brand, you’re in good hands with us. We guarantee the lowest price online for shocks!

What are the most practical ways to update your vehicle?

April 9th, 2012

So you’re not in the market for a nerf bar, truck bed cover or winch? Are you looking for some practical ways to add accessories to your outdated truck, jeep, SUV or car? You can actually modernize your car without having to spend thousands on a new one. There are several sensible products for the frugally-minded available that can make travels easier, safer and more efficient.

Stereo

Few accessories in your vehicle will give you more pleasure while driving than a nice aftermarket stereo. While new cars often offer Pandora, Netflix or other forms of internet entertainment built-in to the dash, your old clunker probably doesn’t have these modern luxuries. There are many aftermarket options that include Bluetooth and MP3 capabilities. There’s really no reason to be stuck listening to archaic radio stations that play the same ten songs over and over again. You can enjoy automatic syncing of your iPod, data from streaming devices, and listen to your entire music collection in your old car.

GPS

Many new vehicles have onboard navigation systems; if yours is older it probably does not. It is a fact that a GPS will relieve stress. With a GPS, never again will you feel lost and have to deal with the stress that brings. You won’t have to ask for directions and you won’t end up in a less than savory part of town. GPS’ easily lead you to restaurants, hospitals, gas stations and other necessities. And, if you know where you are going, it’s comforting to have a map easily visible. Many GPS make it easy to dodge traffic; sometimes you can bypass a traffic jam by skirting through side roads. They are timesavers and are a valuable resource for busy commuters.

Cell Phone

Another viable GPS option is to use a Smart Phone with a GPS Data Plan as a navigation system. Cell phones are great additions to your car’s interior and obviously have multiple uses beyond simply navigation. Cell phones can also utilize Bluetooth making talking, texting and driving safe and legal. Many phones utilize talk-to-text features. iPhones and other Smart Phones are essentially like having small computers attached to the dash of your car. The options to improve your driving experience with them are limitless.

Floor Mats

If you have kids or dogs, ditch the carpet floor mats and get some Husky Liners or mats from another top aftermarket floor liner manufacturer. New aftermarket floor mats seamlessly fit to your specific model’s floorboard and keep milk, lollipops, OJ and other carpet destroying food stuffs from smelling up and staining your already-too-old clunker’s floor. Even if you don’t have kids, get some new liners anyway, everybody spills coffee on the floor at some point!

Fog Lights

Fog lights really work. If you live in an area of the country that has serious fog problems, these aftermarket lights are a great addition to any kind of vehicle. You can’t use high-beams on fog, and low-beams are often not strong enough. Add fog lights to your low-beams and you’re good to go! Instant visibility means increased safety, making fog lights well worth the aftermarket investment.

 Remote Start

If it’s freezing outside, it is so nice to know that you won’t be freezing once you get inside your vehicle. And, if it’s ridiculously hot, remote start can help to start cooling your car down before you get in it. There’s no need to burn the backsides of your legs on leather seats, when it’s avoidable! Some may argue that an old vehicle with remote start is better than a new car without it.

Tires

New tires are expensive, but when your tires hit 50K to 60K miles, it’s usually time to update. New tires increase stability, fuel performance and the overall safety of your vehicle. Updating old tires is a responsible way to make your old car look a lot newer and make it a lot safer without having to buy a new one. Even though a new set can run $600 – $1200, it’s still cheaper than buying a brand new vehicle.

So you see, even if you think it’s a waste of money to update your vehicle with aftermarket parts, it’s really not. Think about it, you’ll save $10,000 – $20,000 by not having to buy a new vehicle. Tires will save you money on gas. A stereo will make your trip more enjoyable. GPS and Cell Phones can keep you safe and save you time from getting lost. Floor mats keep your car cleaner. Fog lights keep you safe in bad weather conditions by increasing your visibility. And a remote start just simply makes your life a lot more comfortable.

How to Save Gas when You Drive a Truck, Have a Rural Commute, or Off-road

April 6th, 2012

Many people don’t have the opportunity to ride a bike, carpool, or utilize any of those idealistic suggestions to save fuel. Most rural commuters and off-road enthusiasts have to use gasoline. There are some inexpensive and functional ways to conserve fuel in your truck, jeep, SUV or off-road vehicle. With gas over $4 a gallon and predicted to be around $5 a gallon by this summer, it’s imperative to keep as much money in your pocket as possible. Whether you’re a rural commuter or a serious off-roader, here are some tips to save some money on gas.

  1. Get a tonneau. Many truck bed covers can make your truck 10% more fuel efficient. As gas prices increase, the payback period on a tonneau goes down. This means you can pay off your tonneau with your fuel savings in just a few months, after the payback period you’re saving tons and tons of cold hard cash. Tonneaus make your truck more fuel efficient by increasing the aerodynamics of the vehicle and reducing the drag that beds and tailgates can cause.
  2. Become a better driver. Don’t gun it, coast when you can, don’t swerve. And along these lines, keep an eye on your tires and replace and align them regularly. Good tire maintenance will pay for itself by increasing both fuel efficiency and safety.
  3. Don’t idle. It uses less gas to turn your vehicle off when you’re not using it. Why waste gas while you’re sitting still? It’s better to use it exploring a trail or traversing rocks and mud!
  4. Turn off the AC. Are you really a hard core off-roader and scared of a little sweat? Roll down the window. If it’s too hard to roll down your windows, convert your manual ones to a set of automatic windows.
  5. Buy gas-saving products. There has been some controversy with these products, but many increase fuel density, which has been linked to fuel savings. For the low cost investment, they’re worth a shot, and you can be the judge. New filters, oil changes, and general vehicle maintenance offer guaranteed fuel savings. Few things waste gas like dirty filters and old oil.

So while biking, walking, carpooling or sitting at home doing nothing may be options for some … those are not the only options for fuel-savings. You can pass those people on the way to your off-roading destination and still save some money!
